What's Included with Every Challenge Coin Frame
Professional-grade components built to protect and display your coins for years
Solid Wood Shadow Box Frame
Real wood construction with extra depth to hold your coins safely. The shadow box design gives your display a layered, three-dimensional look you can't get with a flat frame.
Coin openings cut to fit
Each coin gets its own circular opening cut into the mat board. Computer-controlled cutting means clean edges and a tight fit. Your coins sit flat and stay put.
Framer's Grade Acrylic Front
Clear acrylic protects your coins and photo from dust and handling. Won't shatter like glass. Blocks harmful UV rays that cause fading over time.
Archival Mat Board
Acid-free mat board that won't yellow or stain your coins over time. Available in single or double mat options with dozens of color choices.
Photo Printing Included
Upload your photo and we print it for you on professional photo paper. No need to order a separate print. Your photo arrives framed and ready to hang.
Wall Hanging Hardware
Professional hanging hardware is included with every frame. Left unattached so you can hang it any direction. Security hardware upgrade available for public spaces.
How We Frame Challenge Coins
The details that make a coin display frame worth keeping
Coins Need More Than a Regular Frame
Challenge coins are thick, heavy, and round. A regular picture frame won't work. You need depth for the coins to sit inside the frame without pressing against the front. You need circular openings cut into the mat so each coin has its own spot. And you need a frame strong enough to hold the extra weight on your wall.
That's what a shadow box frame is built for. The extra depth gives your coins room. The mat board holds them in place. The acrylic front keeps dust and fingers off your collection.
Every Coin Gets Its Own Opening
We cut each coin opening individually using computer-controlled equipment. The result is a clean, round hole with a beveled edge that looks sharp and holds the coin snug. The mat overlaps the coin by a small amount on each side, enough to keep it from falling through, but not so much that you lose the design around the edge.
You can adjust the coin opening size in the designer. Most standard challenge coins are 1.75 to 2 inches across, but we handle everything from small unit coins to oversized commemoratives.
Your Photo, Printed and Framed
Every layout includes a photo opening alongside your coins. Upload a photo in the designer (a unit photo, deployment shot, graduation picture, whatever tells the story) and we print it on professional photo paper and frame it right next to your coins.
Smaller layouts (1-4 coins) use a 5x7 photo opening. Larger layouts (5-6 coins) step up to 8x10. You don't need to order a print separately. We handle it.
Add a Brass Nameplate
A nameplate finishes the frame. Add up to three lines of text, a name, rank, unit, dates of service, or whatever matters most. Choose between gold and silver finishes and serif or sans-serif lettering.
The nameplate mounts below the photo and coins on the mat board. It's a small detail that turns a display into something personal.
Who Frames Challenge Coins?
Military veterans displaying service coins. First responders marking career milestones. Families honoring a loved one's service. Collectors who want their coins on the wall instead of in a drawer. If you've earned them, they deserve to be seen.
Archival Materials That Last
Cheap mat board contains acids that cause yellow stains over time. Those stains show up on anything the mat touches, photos, paper backing, even the coins themselves can develop a film. We use acid-free, archival mat board that won't break down or discolor. It's the same material professional framers use for anything valuable.
The backing board is archival too. Your coins and photo are surrounded by materials that will look the same in ten years as they do today.
Choosing the Right Frame Style
Dark frames are the most popular choice for challenge coins. Matte black, walnut, and dark cherry all work well for military and first-responder displays. They feel serious and let the coins stand out against the mat.
That said, there's no wrong answer. Natural wood tones look great in a home office. A lighter frame can soften the look if it's going in a living room. The designer shows you how each frame looks in real time, so try a few options before you decide.
Common Mistakes When Framing Coins
Using a Frame That's Too Shallow
Challenge coins are thick, usually 3-4mm. A regular picture frame doesn't have enough depth. The coin presses against the acrylic front and can scratch it or pop the backing off. Shadow box frames solve this completely.
Gluing Coins to the Backing
Hot glue and super glue leave residue that's almost impossible to remove. If you ever want to take a coin out, to show someone, add it to a different display, or pass it on, you're stuck. Our mat openings hold coins securely without any adhesive.
Skipping the Acrylic Front
Open-front displays let dust settle on your coins and photos. Fingerprints, humidity, and airborne grime build up fast. The acrylic front keeps everything clean and protected while still letting you see every detail.
Picking a Layout
Start with how many coins you want to display. Our layouts handle 1 through 6 coins, each arranged around a central photo opening. One coin sits beside the photo. Two coins flank it on either side. Three or more arrange in rows above or below.
If you're not sure, the 3-coin layout is a good starting point. It's balanced, not too big, and leaves room to add more coins later if you order a second frame. The designer shows the exact finished size for each layout so you know what you're getting before you order.
Questions we hear most
How many challenge coins can I display?
Our designer supports 1 to 6 coins per frame. Each layout pairs your coins with a photo opening, 5x7 for 1-4 coins, or 8x10 for 5-6 coins.
What size coins fit?
The coin openings are adjustable from 1.5 inches up to 2.5 inches. Most standard challenge coins are 1.75 to 2 inches and fit perfectly.
Do you print the photo for me?
Yes. Upload your photo in the designer and we print it on professional photo paper. It arrives framed alongside your coins, ready to hang. No separate print order needed.
Can I add a nameplate?
Yes. Add an engraved brass nameplate with up to 3 lines of text. Choose from serif or sans-serif fonts and gold or silver finishes.
How are the coins held in the frame?
Each coin sits in a precision-cut circular opening in the mat board. The mat overlaps the coin edges slightly, holding it securely in place. No glue or tape needed.
What frame styles work best for challenge coins?
Dark frames like matte black or walnut are the most popular choice. They feel clean and let the coins stand out. But lighter woods and natural finishes work well too, the designer shows you each option in real time.
How thick is the frame?
Our shadow box frames have extra depth compared to regular picture frames. This gives your coins room to sit inside without pressing against the front acrylic.
